POPPOSITIONS is announcing its list of 26 international galleries, project spaces and other not-for-profit organisation to its 8th edition*, ‘Capital of Woke’, which will take place from 25 to 28 April 2019, during the Art Brussels week, with a VIP opening on the 24 April (on invitation).

This edition, which is the third under the direction of Niekolaas Johannes Lekkerkerk, curator and writer at The Office for Curating (NL), revolves around the term ‘woke’ and how its mainstream popularity intersects with corporate and capitalist structures. The idea of being woke concerns raising social awareness and includes taking actions in response to dominant paradigms, acknowledging one’s privileges and giving space to social bodies that have been silenced, unacknowledged and underrepresented.

A selection committee** has chosen the most relevant proposals to be assembled into one single exhibition and fitting under this year’s theme.

Conceived as an experiment with the art fair format, POPPOSITIONS was founded in 2012 by Liv Vaisberg and Pieter Vermeulen in order to trigger experimental and innovative approaches to the art market, while giving a sustainable platform for emerging galleries and art organisation. More than an art fair, it takes the shape of a curated exhibition and an ongoing critical dialogue.
